Maroons lose tight game to Warren - 4-3

Warren 4 - Maroons 3

Maroons drop road game to Notre Dame 3-2

Thursday, Dec. 15

Notre Dame 3 Maroons 2

The Maroons travelled to Notre Dame des Lourdes to face off against the Hawks and just under a minute into the game the home team Hawks would score to go up 1-0 on a goal from Justin Dalebozik set up by Steve Clark.  Less then a minute later Maroons assistant coach Steve McFarlane sent Brett Klassen in alone on a break away and he would beat Hawks goalie Brett Timmerman with a low stick side snapshot to tie the game 1-1.  The Hawks would fire a lot of pucks at Eric Martel in the first period but the score would remained locked at 1-1 heading nto the first intermission.

In the 2nd period the Hawks would get two more goals in the first 8 min. courtesy of a partial breakaway goal from Brody Chabbert and then later import Cale Jeffries would sneak a quick low shot past Martel.  The Maroons ran into penalty trouble nearing the halfway point of the 2nd, however on the first penalty kill Caleb Suderman found Matt Dyck for a long pass into the neutral zone and Dyck would fight off the defender and beat Timmerman for a shorthanded goal making it 3-2.  The Hawks would have two more powerplays in the 2nd which the Maroons would kill off successfully and head to the 3rd period still trailing by a goal.

The 3rd period would see the Maroons increase their play in the Hawks zone looking for the equalizer and late in the period with just under a minute left after Tyler Dittmer was checked from behind the Maroons were on a powerplay and would pull Martel for a 6 on 4 opportunity.  The play was frantic in the Hawks zone and Matt Dyck came close to getting the tying goal but time would expire and the Maroons would leave Notre Dame on the losing side.

John Mintenko remarked after the game that he was very happy with how Eric Martel played.  "He made all the saves he needed to make and didn't give up any rebounds.  Couldn't ask for more from a goalie.  I thought we struggled early on to find each other and gave up too much time in our end, but later in the game we turned the tables a bit, but just couldn't get that tying goal.  Our efffort was there, we just didn't get the result we wanted."

Line up change for the game saw Assistant Coach Steve McFarlane dress and not in the line up was Dale Butland.

Carman 5 - Maroons 1

The Maroons hosted the defending SEMHL champion Carman Beavers on Saturday, Dec. 3rd at the Sunflower Gardens and it was Green Valley Equipment Night.   The hardworking team over at GVE had a John Deere 9620 with tracks on full display in front of the main entrance of the M.E.C. Inside the lobby featured home and garden products such as a John Deere 1025 tractor and Stihl and Airens merchandise as well.  To top it all off free Hot Chocolate coupons were being distributed to fans and fans had a chance to win free door prizes.

The previous meeting between these two teams took place on Nov. 24th with the Beavers narrowly edging the Maroons 7-6 and the Maroons were hoping to feed off that productive game.  The Maroons would open the scoring courtesy of a goal from John Mintenko. Mintenko was dressed with a few guys out of the line up and was able to convert a Mitch Fehr pass and bang the puck past Steve Christie.  Unfortunatley this would be the only goal the Maroons would score during the game.  The Beavers would tie the game in late in the first period and add 2 more goals in the second period.  Early in the third period the Beavers would a fourth goal before scoring a powerplay goal to make it 5-1 with approximatley 15 minutes left in the game.  With his team down by 4 goals, head coach Rob Friesen pulled starting goalie Jayme Janzen and Eric Martel would go in to shut down the Beavers for the rest of the period but the Maroons would be unable to get any pucks past Christie and the Beavers would hang on for the win.

Not in the line up - Angus Klassen, Brett Klassen & Brent Toews

Maroons 5 - Winkler 4

The Maroons travelled to Winkler to take on the Royals and Eric Martel would be in net for his first start of the season.  Just under 7 min. into the first period Angus Klassen would tip a Caleb Suderman wrist shot from the point past Royals goalie Brent Krahn for a 1-0 lead.  Just past the midway point of the period Tyler Dittmer would send Jon Froese in on a breakaway from just inside the Royals blueline and Froese's snapshot would beat Krahn for a 2-0 lead.  Late in the frame Caleb Suderman sent Angus Klassen into the Royals end on a breakaway and Klassens shot would beat Krahn for his 2nd of the game and a 3-0 lead.   Just under a min. later Craig Cornelson would be credited for a goal when a high shot towards Martel would go off Cornelsons body finding the back of the net and cutting the lead to 3-1.

Early in the second period Nolan Martens' quick snapshot from the high slot would beat Krahn building the lead to 4-1.   Later in the period Cody Friesen would cut the Maroons lead to 2 goals when he would find himself near the Maroons net after the puck karamed off the corner boards on a Royals dump in. Martel was already behind the net expecting to play the puck and Friesen simply had to bang it into the empty net.  Tough goal to allo but everyone has seen a goal like this scored.  Plain and simple, these things happen.

Going into the third period the Maroons Steve Doell would have a great scoring chance on a wrist shot that beat Krahn but not the crossbar.  The rebound came out into the slot and Matt Dyck would slide the puck past Krahn to restore a three goal lead.  The Royals didn't fold and later in the frame would make the score 5-3 courtesy of a Powerplay goal with Chad Unrau's shot getting through traffic.   The goal would lift the Royals and with just over a min. left in regulation Phil Letkeman would start a drive into the Maroons end that ended with Craig Cornelson finding the back of the net to make it a 5-4 game.  After a 30 sec. timeout the Royals were hoping to pull Krahn in favour of an extra attacker but were unable to favourably penetrate the Maroons zone and the Maroons would kill the clock off and take 2 points for the standings on a Saturday night in Winkler.

Coach Rob Friesen commented that his team is still learning and there is more to do.  "I thought we did a lot of things well tonight.  I changed the lines up a bit and I liked how it worked out.  Martel kicked away a lot of pucks tonight and made a few really big saves to give us the chance to win. At the end of the night it's a win and we'll take it".  Import defenceman Dale Butland echoed some of Friesens comments in his thoughts on the game. "Marty (Eric Martel) deserves a lot of credit for a great game and as for the rest of us, I thought we were good.  We have some new faces this year and together as a unit we're still feeling things out, looking for an identity."  Not wanting to give too much away, Butland added "We'll be just fine, we're four games in and we're 500.

Not in the line up: Cody Fehr & Jordon Friesen

Morden Redskins 4 @ Altona Maroons 3

peewee_gold1.jpg

Altona Maroons Pee-Wee Gold players Kieran Henry, Kylie Roberts and Caden Krahn discussing how they will skate out with the Senior Maroons.

The Morden Redskins visited Altona and the longtime rivals would give the fans a solid hockey game with many chances going both ways.  In the first period Angus Klassen's pass to Tyler Dittmer would end with Klassen beting Reed Peters for a 1-0 lead.  Before the opening period ended the Redskins tied the game with a goal from import Nick Doyle.  If that name is familiar to Maroons fans it is because Doyle played in Altona last season as an import.  With the Maroons filling a void on the back end and filling it with an import defencman (Dale Butland) Doyle was not able to be part of the Maroons this season.

Early in the second period and on a powerplay Derek Holenski's shot through traffic would beat Jayme Janzen to give the Redskins a 2-1 lead.  The Redskins would build on the lead and late in the period Doyle would give the Redskins a 3-1 lead.  With 30 sec. left in the period on a powerplay of their own Craig Neufeld's wrist shot from the point would be tipped in by Dittmer for his second of the night and cutting the lead to 3-2 before the 2nd intermission.

In the third period Matt Dyck and Jon Froese would connect with Dittmer and Dittmer would beat Peters tying the game, notching a hat trick and more importantly tying the game.  Midway through the period Graham Leiding would score a go ahead goal and for the rest of the third the Maroons would look for the equalizer.  With just under 2 min. left in the game coach Rob Friesen would call a time out and with Janzen pulled in favour of an extra attacker the Maroons would press and send pucks to the Redskins net but Peters closed the door and the Redskins would take the win.

Assistant Coach/G.M. - John Mintenko thought it was a game that could have gone either way.  "I thought we had moments when we controlled the play really well, but there were also moments where we lost some of the battles.  We matched up well with them tonight, but came up a bit short."

Altona Maroons 2 @ Portage Islanders 6

Making the journey to Portage the Maroons were hoping to build off their home opener win against the Royals but the sophmore Islanders would stand in their way. Early in the opening frame import Jordyn Boyd would beat Jayme Janzen for a 1-0 lead and later in the period Boyd struck again converting a pass from Zack Waldvogel making it 2-0.  The Maroons would bounce back  with a goal from Captain Brent Toews as he muscled home a rebound off of Islanders goalie Mitch Wiebe.  After 20 min. the Islanders held the 2-1 lead.

Early in the second period rookie forward Cody Fehr would be assesed a 2 min. minor penalty for hitting from behind and his night was over.  The Maroons would kill off the ensuing Islanders powerplay and look to even the score.  Islanders Dan Leslie would give Portage  3-1 lead midway through the period and shortly thereafter Anders Strome made it 4-1.  The Maroons battled back and would find themselves on a powerplay and Angus Klassen's tipped point shot from Craig Neufeld would find the back of the net cutting the Islanders lead to 4-2.    The Maroons would hope to build off the Klassen goal but late in the period Kyle Lopez would convert a Strome pass behind Janzen giving the Islanders a 5-2 lead heading to the third.

In the thrid period the Maroons would press hard on a powerplay four minutes into the period but would come up short.  With 10 min. left in the game Janzen was pulled for an extra attacker and the Maroons would bring a lot of pressure into the Portage end but couldn't get a puck past Wiebe.  Angus Klassen just missed getting the Maroons to within 2 goals and later Caleb Suderman would have a great opportunity to also score but it just wouldn't be the Maroons night.  Janzen would be sent back out, and then late in the game Janzen would be pulled again but this time with just under 2 min. left on the clock the Islanders would seal the game with Jordan Boyd picked up his hat trick and the final score would be 6-2 in favour of the Islanders.

Kicking off the South Eastern Manitoba Hockey League with all 8 teams in action on Saturday, November 5th the Maroons would host the Winkler Royals.

Early in the game Tyler Dittmer would feed Angus Klassen and Klassen would beat Matt Krahn for a 1-0 lead.  Nearing the midway point of the first Dustin Karsin would tie the game for the Royals 1-1 beating Jayme Janzen.   Later in the frame  Klassen would score his second of the game on a set up from Dale Butland and Matt Dyck.  Shortly before the first intermission Tyler Dittmer would make it 3-1 with assits to Klassen and Butland.

In the second period Jordan Wall would set up Matt Dyck and Dyck's goal would make it 4-1.  The second period would play out with the score holding into the second intermission.

In the third period Steve Doell would score his first goal as a Maroon on a powerplay with assists to Nolan Martens and Jon Froese for a 5-1 lead.  Late in the game former Maroon Phil Letkeman would get a puck past Janzen making it 5-2 but the scoring was done and the Maroons would hold on for an opening night win in front of a great crowd.

Coach Rob Friesen was pleased with the win and the happy dressing room.  "It's great to start the season off with a win.  Especially a home opener.  The guys were looking forward to this game.  We played three exhibition games this year already and we have a bigger bench then we've had in the past two or so seasons.  These guys were chomping at the bit to get out and play a game that meant something.  I don't think that it was the best game we could have played, but I wasn't expecting it to be.  There are 19 more regular season games and this is just a start."

50/50 Winner - Corey Thiessen
